Twitter is the big hot topic right now, that's for sure. Everyone from large corporations to small start-ups are jumping on the bandwagon and talking it up.
A few days ago, The 60 Second Marketer wrote a short piece on How to Sign Up for Twitter. It's a step-by-step tutorial on just how easy it is to sign up.
Once you've signed up, there are three things you should know about being a Twitter user:
1) The idea behind Twitter is that you follow and are followed by a group of people with similar interest.
2) When you send out a 140-character text to your followers, it's called a Tweet.
3) Most people Tweet about their area of interest and try to provide nuggets of information that would be of help to their followers.
4) That's not to say that there isn't plenty of random chit-chat. In fact, about 30% of the Tweets from the people who follow 60SecondTwitter are on random topics ranging from the weather to their mood.
Overall, Twitter is an effective way to leverage the internet for work or play. It can be a gargantuan waste of time (see "Is Twitter a Big, Fat Waste of Time?"), but if it's used properly, it's a wonderful new tool for marketers and regular folks alike.
